With Video: Flash Mob spices up downtown Rice Lake reconstruction efforts with dancing moves

Sixteen dancers donned hard hats and safety vests to show off their boogey moves while construction crews from Haas Sons tear up Main Street concrete in the background at the Newton Street intersection in Rice Lake. Sara Lawton, owner of Poppy Popcorn on the block between Newton and Messenger streets, saw a Flash Mob meme on the internet about construction in the Midwest and thought, "Hey, we’ve got that going on downtown, let's make some fun out of it. Why not?" Downtown business owners and workers, library employees, Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jody Greiner and Mayor Justin Fonfara came out Thursday morning for the show. Business traffic has slowed down a little where the street has been torn up, Lawton said, and the businesses appreciate the community's continued support.

Sara Lawton hands out a safety vest before a homegrown Flash Mob rehearses their Latin-inspired dancing moves in preparation for the main performance.

Sara Lawton, left, joins Rice Lake Public Library Public Services Director Claire Parrish in rehearsals.

The Flash Mob, dancing to "Cupid Shuffle," add Latin dance moves to the sway of the backhoe tearing up concrete downtown Main Street.

Flash mob dancers pause for applause and a photo after their minute-long performance on Main Street.
