Halle Bailey Perfected Under
We've seen all kinds of mermaid-inspired fashion on the red carpet over the years, but nothing has nailed the under-the-sea vibe quite as perfectly as the figure-skimming liquid look gown Halle Bailey wore for the world premiere of The Little Mermaid on May 8. As the actor who plays the titular mermaid in the live-action Disney remake, Bailey clearly understands how to bring that magical underwater energy to life.
The dress's metallic blue fabric recalled the glimmering reflective surface of a body of water, while the shell-shaped detailing at the bust completed the oceanic princess aesthetic. Bailey finished the look with ice-blue eye shadow, a bedazzled manicure, and the long auburn locs she wears in the film. For accessories, she skipped a necklace in favor of some blingy rings and statement diamond earrings that look like they could have been designed in the lost city of Atlantis.
Bailey's gown is by Albanian designer Valdrin Sahiti, known for his goddess-inspired evening and bridal gowns. "Thank you [Halle Bailey] for choosing us for the world premiere of a ‘Little Mermaid.’ Means a lot to me and my team," the designer wrote on Instagram Stories.
The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid has already made waves (get it?) for casting Bailey, a Black actor, as the iconic Ariel character—and she is well aware of the cultural impact the film has already had. "It means the world to me, especially for the beautiful babies to be able to see a reflection of themselves," Bailey said on the red carpet, per per Deadline. "I am just honored to be a part of this and be one of the princesses now because for me it was Brandi as Cinderella and then Anika Rose as Princess Tiana. So the fact that I am getting to continue this and live on this legacy is really exciting and I’m just grateful."
